Max von Essen is having quite a month: His starring role in the new musical An American In Paris earned rave reviews (the New York Times even called von Essen's vocals "in another class") and on Tuesday he earned his very first Tony Nomination.

NewNowNext: How does it feel to be nominated for a Tony Award?

Max von Essen: Well, I actually feel like I'm in some sort of hazy dream, you know? I mean I've thought about this moment, dreamed about it, probably since I was 8 years old. But what I never did was imagine what it was going to be like when and if it happened. I just feel like I've been given this huge gift that I get to keep opening every day. Like forever. I mean there will never be a moment where I look back on this and it will not feel amazing.

Have there been any on-stage mishaps thus far?

The other night I had to learn a new harmony in one of the songs and I was so relieved that I got it right that afterward I just exited. Well, twenty seconds later I'm supposed to sing another phrase in the song and I was just in the wings going 'Ah, thank God I got that harmony.' But I think the audience likes it when a little something goes off because they're reminded that this really is live and they come on board a little bit more.

Can we talk about your cameo at the gayest wedding in the history of cinema, the opening sequence to Sex and the City 2?

[Laughs] Would you believe it two two weeks to do that wedding sequence? We were there until 5am a lot of nights. It was so fun because there were a lot of us in this wedding chorus who were friends and so many of them are going on to do such incredible things, like Andrew Rannells–that's where he and I first became friends. And then Liza! I used to tour with Liza–my first gig out of college–and I never thought I'd be watching her sing "Single Ladies" in a Sex and the City movie.
