Vietnamese Photographer Tâm Bùi Tackles Stigma Against Same-Sex Families In "Daydreamers"

The photo series is working to change the cultural perception of LGBT families in Vietnam.

Vietnamese photographer Tâm Bùi perfectly captures the love between a same-sex couple and their child in a stunning photo series called "Daydreamers."

The series features 25-year-old amateur photographer Huy Nguyen and 23-year-old professional dancer Sung A Lung, along with three-year-old Bo. The three aren't related in any way — a detail that highlights a larger concept the series represents.

Bùi told NewNowNext via email that "Daydreamers" is his "effort to normalize homosexual marriage in Vietnam," a country that doesn't recognize same-sex marriage and, more notably, has a culture that rejects visible representations of LGBTs.

"In the beginning, I had an idea about shooting a gay couple with adopted child but I couldn't find any suitable one," Bùi told NewNowNext. "Homophobia in Vietnam is huge but as society grows, gay men are achieving more and more for both themselves and the community."

Thanks in part to work like Bùi's, social content is helping to shift perception of LGBTs to a more positive space. Since Bùi shot "Daydreamers" in December 2014, it's gone viral with over 600,000 notes on Tumblr.

Soon, Bùi hopes to release a photobook that includes "Daydreamers" along with two more photo stories, Ga Trong (Single Dad) and Ga Mai (Single Mom). "It talks about people who suffer a lot to gain happiness in their lives," Bùi told NewNowNext. "Both LGBT and straight have pain in searching for a soulmate, but the way that they overcome it has inspired people."
