"Vita and Virginia" Trailer Teases Virginia Woolf's Epic (and Totally True) Lesbian Romance

The queer period drama to end all queer period dramas!

Who needs fictional dalliances when the most scintillating 20th-century lesbian romance actually happened?

The trailer for IFC Films' Vita and Virginia has dropped—and offers viewers a glimpse into the torrid real-life love affair between literary icons Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West.

Starring Elizabeth Debicki as Woolf and Gemma Arterton as Sackville-West—the brash, daring wife of an aristocrat who falls for Woolf's words and then her heart—the film pulls from letters exchanged between both writers during their drawn-out dalliance. (Yes, those letters are as eloquent and gay as can be. Just check out this Autostraddle list of 10 super-sapphic excerpts.)

Debicki (L) as Woolf and Arterton (R) as Sackville-West.

As IndieWire reports, the film premiered in 2018 to rave reviews from critics, who praised Debicki's acting chops in the role of the prolific and beloved English literary great. The film also screened at this year's Provincetown Film Festival, but we're pretty sure you don't need much more convincing to check out another top-notch lesbian period drama (Colette, anyone? Or HBO's Gentleman Jack?)

Watch the full trailer for Vita and Virginia below, and keep an eye out for the film's theatrical premiere stateside on August 23. It will also be released on VOD on August 30.
