Vladimir Putin On Showering With A Gay Man

"Why provoke him?"

A sneak peek of Oliver Stone's upcoming interview series The Putin Interviews has revealed a number of odd and offensive confessions from the Russian president, including that he'd refuse to shower next to a gay man if he were stuck in a submarine with him.

Putin made the remark while discussing whether or not openly gay Russians are allowed to serve in the military.

"If you’re taking a shower in a submarine with a man and you know he’s gay, do they have a problem with that?" Stone asked, according to the Daily Beast.

"Well, I prefer not to go to shower with him," Putin allegedly responded. "Why provoke him? But you know, I’m a judo master and a SAMBO master as well. And I can tell you this, that as head of state today, I believe it’s my duty to uphold traditional values and family values. But why? Because same-sex marriages will not produce any children."

He went on to say that because God has "decided" that LGBT people can't have children, it's his duty to "reinforce families."

"But," he added, "that doesn’t mean that there should be any persecutions against anyone."

More than a month after reports of an anti-gay purge in Chechnya first surfaced, Putin approved an investigation into the allegations this past May.

Putin signed off on the inquiry even though he previously stated that he had no reason to believe claims that the Chechen government had built at least six concentration camps specifically for gay men and encouraged families to kill their LGBT children.

Last week, France's newly elected president Emmanuel Macron met with the Russian president and challenged his noncommittal stance on Chechnya, saying he would closely monitor his investigation.

The Putin Interviews will debut June 12 on Showtime.
