Vladimir Putin Telephoned Elton John To Discuss LGBT Equality In Russia

"I look to forward to meeting with you face-to-face."

Elton John's recent comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin's stance on LGBT rights (which he called isolating, prejudiced and ridiculous) have caught the ear of the stigmatizing world leader, who telephoned the rocket man in an effort to open a discussion.

John first voiced his desire to meet with Putin on Saturday, telling the BBC that he'd like to meet with Putin to discuss his country's anti-gay propoganda laws:

I’d probably not [change his mind], but I’ll have a go! I’d love to meet him, I’d love to sit down with him and talk to him. It’s probably pie in the sky... but if I meet him and say ‘let’s have a cup of tea and talk about this,' he may laugh behind my back when he shuts the door, and call me an absolute idiot, but at least I can think I have the conscience to say I tried.

I’d say come on–gay people are not the problem here. They are not the problem of the world, the world faces much bigger problems than gay people. Don’t isolate and be prejudiced against gay people.

Putin’s spokesman told journalists yesterday that despite the Kremlin being aware of the remarks, no formal request had been made by John to precipitate a dialogue between the two.

Russian politican Vitaly Milonov told the Guardian that John should not distract Putin with such an “irrelevant topic” as the “rights of some kind of perverts or another," offering himself to meet with John in Putin's place.

And then this appeared...

"Thank-you to President Vladimir Putin for reaching out and speaking via telephone with me today," says the caption. "I look to forward to meeting with you face-to-face to discuss LGBT equality in Russia."

According to reports, no date has been set for the meeting.
