"Voltron" Superfan Blackmails Studio To Get Gay Relationship In New Cartoon

Shipping is serious business.

While it's not uncommon for fans to "ship" fictional characters and try to get studio heads to make these romances canon, one Voltron superfan has allegedly taken things to the next level by resorting to straight up blackmail.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe is an American animated series featuring a team of astronauts who pilot a super robot known as Voltron. The cartoon originally ran in the mid 1980s and spawned two follow-up series and several comic books.

The latest iteration of the cult classic came in 2016 with Voltron: Legendary Defender, a reboot collaboration between Netflix, DreamWorks Animation and Studio Mir, who animates the series.

Though the show is quite popular, some tension has arisen in the community after one superfan posted unauthorized photographs of confidential storyboards online after taking a tour of Studio Mir.

The images spread like wildfire on Twitter and Tumblr, which left the studio exposed to lawsuits from DreamWorks if they were unable to successfully remove the sketches.

Most fans complied with requests to take down the leaked photographs, but Tumblr user "Klance14," who identified him/herself as one of the original leakers, has refused to delete the images.

When asked by Studio Mir, the fan said they would only take down the photographs if the studio actualized the relationship between Klance, the fictionalized couple name of Voltron protagonists Keith and Lance.

While this particular pairing is popular in the fandom, several fans of the show have taken to social media to express anger over Klance14's tactics.

Though it's unclear what if any action DreamWorks will take against Studio Mir for the leaks, it seems highly unlikely that the situation will be resolved by making the Klance romance a reality.
