Warrant Issues For Suspect In Fire That Destroyed Montreal Gender-Confirmation Clinic

Authorities believe Jayne Ellen Heideck, 42, set the blaze after being unsatisfied with a procedure she underwent there.

A warrant has been issued for a suspect in the fire that damaged Montreal's Centre Métropolitain de Chirurgie, the only clinic in Canada that performs gender-confirming surgery.

Jayne Ellen Heideck, 42, is wanted in connection with the blaze, which forced the center to close.

While many saw the incident as a direct attack on the country's trans community, a police spokesperson said investigators have ruled out a hate crime. According to le Journal de Montréal, authorities believe Heideck, who is trans, set the fire because she was unhappy with the results of a procedure she underwent there.

Whether that would automatically preclude the fire from being a hate crime is not clear.

The clinic went up in flames earlier this month when someone rushed in a set the operating room on fire, destroying $700,000 worth of equipment in the process. Firefighters quashed the blaze before any employees were hurt, but hundreds of thousands of dollars more in damage was caused smoke and water from the sprinkler system.

Patients from across Canada fly to the clinic, where Dr. Pierre Brassard performs gender confirmation surgeries.

Patients worry the clinic's closing will only add to the long wait many have endured to transition.

“In my case it’s been about 10 years of false starts and trying to raise money, and this last run-up has been about a year and a half of doctors’ appointments and just dealing with everything from time off work to air fare, and all sorts of things that you don’t really think about," one patient told the Montreal Gazette.

“I hope that this spurs conversation on the shortage of health care providers and surgeons both in Canada and the U.S."
