Washington State Bans Conversion Therapy For Kids

"Children... deserve to live their lives authentically."

Lawmakers in Washington State have voted to outlaw gay conversion therapy on minors, making it the 10th to ban the discredited practice.

SB 5722, which cleared the state Senate 33-16 on Saturday, makes it a prosecutable offense for a licensed healthcare practitioner to perform conversion therapy on a patient under the age of 18. Those found guilty could face fines or have their license revoked.

Amendments in the House version include applying the law to non-licensed counselors and clergy operating as part of a religious organization. The measure won’t however, impact adults seeking the treatment.

“Children across the Evergreen State deserve to live their lives authentically and should never be subjected to the abusive practice of so-called conversion therapy,” said HRC’s JoDee Winterhof.

β€œIt’s time for Washington to join the growing number of states and municipalities who are enacting these critical protections. We thank the state legislators who voted to protect LGBTQ youth from this dangerous practice and now call on Governor Inslee to sign this crucially important legislation.”

SB 5722 now goes before Governor Jay Inslee, who is expected to sign it into law.
