Watch: Gay Rights Activist Dick Leitsch's Final Appearance in Outfest Doc

The short explores the importance of allies and our chosen family.

Last month, gay civil rights activist Dick Leitsch, whose actions helped end discriminatory practices at New York City bars through organized "sip-ins," passed away at the age of 83. One month before his death, Leitsch was filmed in a new documentary short premiering at Outfest Los Angeles.

Directed by Outfest alumnus Stephen Winter and presented by Barefoot, One Stride: Chosen Family is a doc short that celebrates the stories of three sets of LGBTQ friends and families to shine a light on how the community supports each other through a "chosen family."

In this clip, Leitsch is seen with Paul Havern, a younger man who became Leitsch's best friend after learning of his story.

After the film shows on July 21, it will be available to all on Barefoot's website.
