Wedding Expert: The top 6 destination weddings for gay couples

Our heterosexual brethren have so many wedding choices. The world is their marriage oyster and they can have a destination wedding almost anywhere - but what about us? Here are the top six destinations for same-sex weddings. Not only are they fantastic places to visit, but are places that have governments that are marriage equality pioneers.

Barcelona, Spain. Blessed with year-round California-like weather, Barcelona would be a perfect place to take your wedding and your witnesses. You can enjoy the Mediterranean, the fantastic shopping or even head to Spain's gay beach resort, Stiges, a skip, hop and a jump away. Also know that siestas are welcome, especially after your late night celebration!

Stockholm, Sweden. One of the most liberal places on the planet, no one will bat an eye at a same-sex couple holding hands while walking down the sidewalk. Take advantage of their amazing summer weather and friendly faces. It would also be easy to honor Sweden at your reception with music by ABBA, Robyn and Roxette (Make sure you also check out Lars Winnerbäck and Anna Ternheim). A great after wedding party would be on Patricia, a gay bar on a boat!

Cape Town, South Africa. Desmond Tutu called South Africa the Rainbow Nation  - it was the first country in Africa to legalize same-sex marriage! With amazing wines, weather and beaches it sounds like a perfect place to get hitched. If you and your wedding party are into hiking, you can take a day to explore Table Mountain or just relax at the beautiful beaches.

Montreal, Canada. If you want all of the flavor of Europe without leaving the continent, go to Montreal. It's a quick trip up north if you're in the northeastern part of the United States and an ideal trip for those that may fear the destination wedding. If those that are attending your wedding are into comedy, this is a great place to be. Montreal hosts the Just for Laughs Festival, one of the biggest comedy festivals in North America and the launch pad for many comedy careers. Or, if you hurry, you might be able to make it in time for the annual Queer of the Year contest, in August.

Lisbon, Portugal. Brush up on your Portuguese and head to Lisbon! It doesn't have the biggest gay scene but the beaches are fantastic and a great place to go on an architectural tour. You can see Sao Roque Church, the world's most expensive chapel or one of the world's longest bridges, The Vasco Da Gama Bridge.

Reykjavík, Iceland. If you want to party in the sunlight for your summer wedding book your tickets to Reykjavik! You can dance all night -  just don't forget your sunblock. Also take advantage of their geothermal spas, the most natural way to relax and spend the day after a stressful wedding.

Readers, what is your top choice for a destination wedding? Would any of these six top your list?
