Queer Dance Documentary “When the Beat Drops” Wins Big at Outfest L.A.

Snatching trophies!

When the Beat Drops, the new documentary directed by Jamal Sims is snatching trophies.

The film follows a crew of gay African-American men as they pioneer the Southern-rooted underground dance scene known as “bucking," and it just took home the Documentary Feature Grand Jury Prize at this year's Outfest film festival in L.A.

World of Wonder

The festival's jury said the film warranted the award for its "heart, energy, and triumphant spirit as it explores a vibrant community of under-appreciated performers in this directorial debut that exhibits great potential."

This isn't the first trophy the documentary has snatched. The film also won the Outstanding Documentary Jury Award at this year's Frameline film festival in San Francisco. Don't worry if you can't make it to any of these screenings around the country because When the Beat Drops is about to make its television debut on Logo.
