Which European Country Was Named The Best For LGBT People?

ILGA-Europe, an international human rights group, has announced the results of its 2015 Rainbow Europe Index, which ranks how well LGBT and intersexed people are protected in various European nations.

Scotland now comes ahead of the rest of the UK and Europe in the legal protections it offers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people.

After the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2014, Scotland met 92% of the report's 48 criteria—including workplace and public-accommodations protections, hate crime laws, marriage equality and parenting rights, and equality for trans and intersexed people.

The other top-five ranked European countries were the remainder of the UK (86%), Belgium (83%), Malta (77%), and Sweden (72%).

The five Euro countries ranked worst for LGBTI equality were Azerbaijan (5%), Russia (8%), Armenia (9%), Ukraine (10%) and Monaco (11%).

Scotland's the Equality Network welcomed the news, and thanked the Scottish Government and Parliament for its willingness to consult with LGBTI people on a variety of issues.

"However, the Equality Network warns against any complacency, as we know there is still much more to do to achieve full equality for LGBTI people in Scotland," said spokesman Tom French, citing in particular the rights of trans and intersex people.

"Despite real progress in the law, LGBTI people in Scotland are still facing unacceptable levels of prejudice, discrimination and disadvantage throughout their live," he said.
