Lifetime has announced that Rob Lowe (after his role as far-too-mustachey Drew Peterson) is slated to play prosecutor Jeff Ashton in an upcoming TV movie about the trial of Casey Anthony. However, the title role has yet to be cast. Here’s a list of some potentially-wonderful contenders:
Alison Brie
Up until now, Brie has been known for her upbeat, feminine roles on Community and Mad Men. It’d be fascinating to see a darker side of this little ray of sunshine, and if Rob Lowe can play pudgy, salt-and-pepper Jeff Ashton, Alison can certainly work as a significantly-prettier version of Anthony.
Aubrey Plaza
Okay, this one’s definitely an appeal to all the Parks and Recreation fans out there, but, actually, Aubrey’s monotone, deadpan comedic tone could easily be turned around to play someone a bit more (allegedly) sociopathic. But, mainly, it’s April Ludgate and Chris Traeger in a courtroom drama. Who wouldn’t immediately switch to Lifetime to watch that??
Rooney Mara
In The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Mara proved two things; one, she’s one of the most promising new talents in Hollywood and absolutely mesmerizing to watch onscreen, and two, she can totally pull off having no eyebrows, so Casey’s overly-plucked ones and beady eyes should be no issue for the young starlet.
Krysten Ritter
She already plays a brilliant villain in Don’t trust the B—- in Apartment 23, and as the heroin-abusing girlfriend of Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, Ritter clearly has some range as an actress and could even add a dose of humanity (albeit, a moderate one) to Anthony.
