Whoopi Goldberg is getting back in the habit—again.
The original star of Sister Act and its 1993 sequel has announced that she will be reprising her role as lounge singer-turned-nun Deloris Van Cartier in next year’s revival of the Sister Act musical on London’s West End.
*WHOOPI’S BACK* @WhoopiGoldberg will be coming to the @EventimApollo London next summer to play Deloris in @sisteractsocial alongside JENNIFER SAUNDERS as Mother Superior! “Yeah, the original Deloris is back, a little older, a little seasoned but really still kind of out there,” Goldberg said in a video announcement.
The EGOT winner also broke the news on The View, where she revealed that she has been met with “resistance” to getting Sister Act 3 off the ground, so her starring in this new production might prove that the franchise is not “dated.”
Goldberg’s return wasn’t the only bit of exciting casting news. Edina Monsoon herself, Jennifer Saunders, will play Mother Superior, the role played by Dame Maggie Smith in the movies. Sweetie darling, this is absolutely fabulous news! It will mark a reunion for the two actresses; Goldberg guest-starred on Ab Fab in the 2002 episode “Gay.”
“This is a very special one-off opportunity created just for London to see one of the most loved actors of our time playing the part she is so famous and so loved for,” said Sister Act producer Jamie Wilson. “The addition of Jennifer means that Sister Act truly promises to be the ultimate night of laughs and smiles with two comedy greats. It really is going to be a brilliant summer!”
Book your flights now because Sister Act will run from July 29 to August 30, 2020, at London’s Eventim Apollo. Oh, happy day!
