Wigstock! 2.HO Left Us Bald

A day for the herstory books.

This past weekend a beloved institution of New York nightlife, Wigstock, triumphantly returned to the stage with a day-long festival of fierceness that left us bald by the end of the evening.

Born in 1984, the original Wigstock was held every summer for 15 years, until the party finally stopped in 2001 when Wigstock went dark. A mini-Wigstock was held for a few years as part of the Howl! Festival, and there was an evening cruise version in 2015 and 2016.

Earlier this summer, the event’s organizer and producer, Lady Bunny, announced that with the help of Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, David Burtka, Wigstock would be resurrected as Wigstock 2.HO, and would feature some of the biggest names in the drag and nightlife world.

The party was held Saturday, September 1, at the new Pier 17 rooftop space, where attendees could watch the festival with a historic New York landmark, the Brooklyn Bridge, as the backdrop, with another landmark, Lady Bunny, onstage in front.

In addition to Bunny, other nightlife legends performed including Joey Arias, Kevin Aviance, Amanda Lepore, Justin Vivian Bond, Pixie Aventura, Barbara Tucker, Jackie Beat, Sherry Vine, Candis Cayne, Lina Bradford, Varla Jean Merman, Drew Droege, Alex Newell, and many more.

RuPaul’s Drag Race royalty Bianca Del Rio, Sharon Needles, Jinkx Monsoon, Bob the Drag Queen, Peppermint, and Latrice Royale also took the stage throughout the event. The day ended with Neil Patrick Harris reprising his Tony-winning role of Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, in an energetic rockin’ performance that brought the house down.
