Lady Bunny and Neil Patrick Harris Revive Wigstock for a New Generation

The fierce festival will take place September 1 in New York.

Slip into some heels and throw on your favorite wig because Wigstock, the drag-centric concert celebrating the New York downtown nightlife scene, is back!

This week’s announcement about the return of the event coincided with the release of the latest episode of RuPaul and Michelle Visage’s podcast, What’s the Tee?, where their guest, Lady Bunny, reminisced about how the original Wigstock was born in 1984 after a late-night impromptu concert in Thompkins Square Park in the East Village.

For 15 years the annual festival was a highlight for queens and their fans, but the party finally stopped in 2001 when Wigstock went dark. A mini-Wigstock was held for a few years as part of the Howl! Festival, and there was an evening cruise version in 2015 and 2016. Now Lady Bunny, with the help of Neil Patrick Harris, has resurrected the concert for a new generation—and the children won’t have to wait long. The new Wigstock will take place Labor Day weekend, on September 1 at Pier 17, located at the South Street Seaport in New York.

“A lot of people only see drag on TV and they’re watching people lip-sync because they’re about to lose,” Harris told the New York Times, referring to RuPaul’s Drag Race. “I want to see people doing song after song of what they do best, and let everyone applaud and appreciate on their terms.”

There are more than 70 performers scheduled to take part in the concert including:

Alaska, Alex Newell, Amanda Lepore, Barbara Tucker, Basil, Bianca Del Rio, Bob the Drag Queen, Candis Cayne, Charlene Incarnate, Darnelle XV, Desmond Is Amazing, Dina Martina, Dita Von Teese, Heklina, Jackie Beat, Jada Valenciaga, Jinkx Monsoon, Joey Arias, Justin Vivian Bond, Kevin Aviance, Latrice Royale, Lina Bradford, Linda Simpson, Lypsinka, Murray Hill, Peaches Christ, Peppermint, Raven O, Sherry Vine, Taylor Mac, Varla Jean Merman and Willam.

The 1994 Wigstock festival was filmed and turned into Wigstock: The Movie, which you should watch to prepare for the upcoming day of fierce festivities. For ticket and venue info head over to the Wigstock website.

Wigstock and RuPaul’s DragCon in New York in the same month?! It’s almost too much!

I write about drag queens. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever."
