New Wigstock Doc to Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival

The film will cap off a day-long event full of panels and guest speakers called Tribeca Celebrates Pride.

What's that on your head?

This year's Tribeca Film Festival already has a robust lineup of LGBTQ films including documentaries about the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, RuPaul's Drag Race queen Trixie Mattel, and Chelsea Manning. Now the festival has announced it will host the world premiere of a new HBO documentary, Wig, all about New York drag culture, and the 2018 revival of the legendary event, Wigstock.

"Wig explores the origins and the influence of the historic festival through rich archival footage, as well as provides a look into the contemporary drag movement that the Wigstock festival served as a foundation for. Wig is a celebration of New York drag culture, and those personalities and performances that contribute to the ways we understand queerness, art, and identity today," reads the press release for the film. After the screening there will be an epic drag performance hosted by Wigstock's founder, Lady Bunny.

The premiere of Wig will cap off a day-long event on May 4 called Tribeca Celebrates Pride featuring a variety of panels and guest speakers from the LGTBQ community.

"Intended to supplement the LGBTQ+ content playing across the festival, this day is dedicated to the visibility of all the identities within the queer family. The empowering program includes notable LGBTQ+ public figures as guest speakers and a series of topical panel discussions with queer luminaries and thought leaders," reads the Tribeca press release. "You'll hear established filmmakers share their stories and then meet the next generation of emerging voices with a screening of new LGBTQ+ short films."

Guest speakers for the day include Larry Kramer, Neil Patrick Harris, Asia Kate Dillon, John Cameron Mitchell, and the co-hosts of the Nancy podcast, Nancy Tobin Low and Kathy Tu. The day-long event will also feature panels on topics such as Activism Through the Ages, Being a Multi-Hyphenate, LGBTQ Media Visiblity, Out in Office, and more.
