Will Donald Trump Make The Republican Party More Gay-Friendly?

The front-runner recently shocked members of his party when he said that transgender people should "use the bathroom they feel is appropriate."

Donald Trump has attacked just about every group, from Hispanics to women to African-Americans, during his controversial run to become the Republican presidential nominee, but the front-runner has neglected to attack gay men and lesbians during his campaign.

To be clear, he's certainly not as supportive of the gay community as the Democratic candidates are, stating that he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. He is, however, far more accepting of LGBT people than any of his competitors in the Republican party — a fact that Ted Cruz is now trying to use against him.

Trump shocked many in his party on Thursday during an appearance on Today, when he came out in opposition of North Carolina's discriminatory HB2 law.

He stated that transgender people should "use the bathroom they feel is appropriate," which led Cruz to quickly create an ad slamming Trump for his support of LGBT issues.

In the ad, Cruz says:

"Should a grown man pretending to be a woman be allowed to use the women’s restroom? The same restroom used by your daughter? And your wife? Donald Trump thinks so. It’s not appropriate and it’s not safe. It’s PC nonsense that’s destroying America. Donald Trump won’t take on the PC police. He’s one of them."

Trump's views on gay rights, and his relationships with many gay friends and colleagues throughout his time in New York, certainly make him stand out among his more narrow-minded Republican peers.

That's why Log Cabin Republicans, an organization that works within the Republican Party to advocate equal rights for LGBT people, is standing by Trump during this election.

“He will be the most gay-friendly Republican nominee for president ever,” said Gregory T. Angelo, the president of the Log Cabin Republicans.

It's difficult to forget the many offensive things that Trump has spouted during his campaign to be the Republican presidential nominee, but is it possible that he'll at least make the Republican Party a little more gay-friendly in the process?
