Videos Of Violence Against Trans People Are Being Shared As Entertainment, New Report Finds

"For many people, these videos in and of themselves are a secondary act of violence."

A disturbing number of videos depicting violence against transgender people are being shared on websites and social media for "entertainment," a new report from the human rights organization Witness suggests.

The report analyzed the ratings and comments of 329 such videos posted across several social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Vine, and Twitter, and also from so-called "shock" sites like Live Leak, World Star Hip Hop, and Fly Height.

In most, trans people are seen being beaten and verbally harassed in public.

Of the 230,262 comments those videos attracted, Witness found a majority of them were either negative or celebratory.

In the video below, activist Kylar Broadus reads some of the most disturbing.

"If you see a crazy tranny coming at you, don't fight it, you might catch AIDS. Just shoot it," one comment reads.

Another says: "This is a preview of what will happen to trannies in women's restrooms. Kill that fucking tranny."

"People are regularly posting [this type of video] on all kinds of sites, and that tells us something very different about what's happening around violence against trans folks than what is out there right now," said Beverly Tillery, Executive Director of the New York City Anti-Violence Project.

"For many people, these videos in and of themselves are a secondary act of violence."

Broadus added: "They're not just targeted at those victims in the videos, they're targeted at all trans people."
