WNBA Star Layshia Clarendon Just Married Her College Sweetheart

The Atlanta Dream point guard returned to Berkley for the intimate ceremony.

WNBA all-star Layshia Clarendon married her college sweetheart, Jessica Dolan, last weekend at their alma mater, University of California, Berkeley.

The two met while Clarendon was a member of the Golden Bears and Dolan was working for the team. Clarendon helped take the the Bears to its first Final Four appearance back in 2013.

Clarendon, a point guard for the Atlanta Dream and member of the U.S. Women's National team, is also co-founder of Br{che the Silence, which advocates for LGBT inclusion in women's sports. Dolan is a marketing consultant who represents Olympians and other female athletes. The happily married couple is now celebrating their honeymoon in Napa.

This has been a notable year in WNBA weddings: The Washington Mystics' Elena Delle Donne married partner Amanda Clifton in early November, and Phoenix Mercury player Diana Taurasi married ex-teammate Penny Taylor in May.

Clarendon, 26, frequently uses her fame to discuss the intersection of queer identity, religion, race, and sports.

"I identify as black, gay, female, non-cisgender and Christian," she wrote in an essay in the Players Tribune. "I am an outsider even on the inside of every community to which I belong. My very existence challenges every racial, sexual, gender and religious barrier."

She knew she was gay from a young age, but wrote that seeing her family disown her older sister terrified her. But after getting a scholarship at UCB, Clarendon found acceptance from coaches and teammates. It's an acceptance she's struggled to find in the WNBA and professional sports in general, but she's advocating for change.

"It’s our league to be more involved with, but it’s not just about the WNBA," she wrote. "These are conversations we should have across all sports and leagues."
