“Heartstopper” Actress Yasmin Finney Boards the TARDIS for “Doctor Who”

"I cannot wait to begin this journey."

Yasmin Finney is going from Heartstopper to... hanging out with a Time Lord?

The BBC has announced that Finney, who is trans and plays Elle Argent on Netflix's hit series Heartstopper, will be "playing the character of Rose" in next year's 60th anniversary of Doctor Who. Is this the same Rose — played by Billie Piper — who was the Doctor's companion when the sci-fi series was revived in 2005?

The BBC is currently saying fewer words than a Weeping Angel, so we will have to wait and see, but over the weekend it was also revealed that former Doctor Who stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate would be returning for the 60th celebration, so it appears nothing is off the table.

"If anyone would have told 8-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them," Finney said in a statement. "This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life. I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get Ready.”

Finney has become a fan favorite among Heartstopper fans for playing the role of Elle. She recently spoke with Pink News about how refreshing it was reading a trans storyline that was sweet and not depressing:

“It really, really, really is such a rare story that we get a trans character that doesn’t delve into gender dysphoria, or depression, or bullying, but just the positive – the friendship, the chosen family, the moving from an all boys’ school to an all girls’ school," Finney explained. "Just everything that is natural about being trans is highlighted, and I’m just so happy to be that positive representation that we’ve needed for so many years.”

Finney's casting is just the latest Whovian news. As Logo previously reported, Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will be the next actor to take on the iconic role of the Doctor on Doctor Who when the new season premieres in 2023. Gatwa will be the 14th actor and first Black man to portray the iconic character. He is taking over for Jodie Whittaker, who played the role for three seasons and was the series’ first female doctor.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies also released a statement on Finney's casting: "Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder, how can there be another Rose? You'll find out in 2023, but it's an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Who set. We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world — and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!"
