Chicks On Speed, The Carry Nation, Karim & Karam Headline Berlin's Yo! Sissy Queer Music Festival

Organizers hope to break down barriers between audience and performer, with panels, workshops and record-label events.

Summer music festivals are often lacking in LGBT-inclusivity, which is why Berlin's Yo! Sissy international queer music festival is so incredible. On July 28 and 29, the third annual fest will feature performers from more than 20 countrie, including Chicks on Speed, the Carry Nation, rapper Jay Boogie, Karim & Karam, and Berlin's own Planningtorock.

Organizers say the goal of Yo! Sissy is to "create a space for all people to be their fabulous selves while supporting emerging queer artists with the stages they deserve." Past performers have included Peaches, Cakes da Killa, JD Samson, Mykki Blanco, Christeene and Le1f.

The 2017 festival will have five stages, plus panels, workshops, and a marketplace featuring queer labels and other businesses. The hope is to encourage festivalgoers to start making their own music.

"Breaking down barriers, including those between audience and performer, has been an important element of Yo! Sissy since its inception," festival founders Pansy and Scout (above) said on the Yo! Sissy website. "These workshops will provide our audience members with information on equipment, skills, and knowledge to develop their own music production."

Various artists and DJs have also uploaded Yo! Sissy mixtapes, podcasts and playlists onto Soundcloud.
