Ummm, no it ain’t about Bill Clinton.
So… The world is abuzz about reports that Carly Simon wrote “You’re So Vain” about gay record-industry mogul David Geffen back in the day. Meow! Total gay-bitchiness!
Reports today say that Simon whispers Geffen’s name on her new recording of the song (audible when you listen to it backwards; who still does that?), and that’s the clincher. Allegedly she wrote the tune about DG because she was miffed that the music mogul was spending too much time promoting Joni Mitchell back in the 70s, who was sort of Carly’s rival. Hmmmm… Okay. But is it a bummer she wasn’t writing about Warren Beatty or some other lost paramour?
David Geffen with Joni Mitchell, and with Cher back in his “early vain” period.
Whatevs. I can totally see Geffen rocking an apricot scarf and thinking his poo don’t smell. I aspire to those same qualities!
Factoid: Joni Mitchell also wrote a tune about Geffen. Her “Free Man in Paris” is all about him. So, he wins!
After the jump, watch Carly singing her snarky classic!
Here’s a classic video of Simon performing the tune at a concert on Martha’s Vineyard years ago…
And here she is talking about the song on A&E’s “Private Sessions.” Who knew David Geffen could “gavotte?”
