YouTuber's Father Reveals He Contemplated Suicide When His Son Came Out

"I look back now and I think it's so stupid."

Popular gay YouTuber Riyadh Khalaf's latest vlog took an emotional turn when his father, who was born and raised in Iraq, reveals he contemplated suicide when his son came out to him.

Riyadh interviewed his parents, Lorraine and Sam, about their reactions to his coming out years earlier. Even though his mother said she struggled with the news after hearing for the first time, it's clear his father had a much more difficult time processing the information.

Riyadh reveals how he grew distant from his father after coming out to his mother first, who was supportive. When he finally came out to his father, he was so scared that he had to write it on a pice of paper and slide it to his father across the table.

"I just read it and I was like, waiting to sink in," said Sam. "I was like, 'Really? No, it can’t be. Is it?’ It was just so confusing, because something just hits you like, bang — and you’re not really expecting it, and you’ll be thinking of what to do, and the family, but when you think about it, it's just so stupid."

"I actually got up that night after you all went to sleep, I think at 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning sitting on the deck, and I was looking for a tablet to commit suicide.”

Riyadh and Lorraine comfort Sam, who calls his plan "so stupid" in hindsight.

"Imagine if you would have done that, how stupid that would have been" Lorraine tells him. Riyadh adds, "And all because of a few fuckin' dickheads with opinions that you were afraid of."
