The German DJ/producer started getting attention last year when he released popular remixes of songs by Skrillex and Lady Gaga, and he’s supporting Gaga on the Asian leg of tour. According to Billboard, he’s probably working on Gaga’s new album, and he’s definitely working with superstar writer-producer Max Martin.
In case you don’t know, Max Martin has been dominating pop music since 1997, creating hits for everyone from Robyn to Usher to Katy Perry to Backstreet Boys. If Zedd’s working with him and with Lady Gaga, then he’s about to be a very big deal.
Right now, you can experience his latest single “Spectrum” featuring Matthew Koma. (This is different from the Florence + The Machine song.) It’s taking off in clubs, and I can see why. The production is spotless, and more importantly, it’s dynamic. Instead of just looping the same beat over and over, Zedd changes tempos and soundscapes. The track is airy and swooshy in this part, but in this part it’s dark and hammering.
But not matter what, the song keeps coming back to the uplifting chorus. And every time it comes back, I get excited. It’s like the return of an old friend. “Oh, hey! I was just experimenting with this dark vibe, but I am SO glad to see your cheery face again!”
And speaking of cheery faces, it doesn’t hurt that Zedd is extremely cute. Who’s going to complain when a beautiful German boy makes dance music? No one.
So there you go: There’s you introduction to Zedd and his dance-friendly cuteness. Auf Wiedersehen!
