Church Flies Trans, QPOC Centering Pride Flag

The flag is flying high for Calgary Pride Week.

Hillhurst United Church in Calgary is flying a transgender and queer people of color centering flag to celebrate Pride week, which is underway and runs through September 3.

The "progress Pride flag," designed by Daniel Quasar, is an update to the traditional rainbow flag, created by Gilbert Baker. In addition to incorporating the trans Pride flag, Quasar's flag includes brown and black stripes to represent people of color. The black stripe also represents "those living with AIDS, those no longer living, and the stigma surrounding them."

"We are including the trans colors and the black and brown stripes for people of color, and Indigenous peoples as well,” Keith Murray, affirming coordinator, told CTV News.

"The church has long standing been the culprit of discrimination of LGBT community of oppression and eradication of indigenous communities and it’s very important that we reclaim these spaces and stand up as inclusive churches to say no."

"I am not queer one day and Indigenous the other, I am one package," said Evans Yellow Old Woman, a two-spirit member of Siksika First Nation, of the importance of recognizing intersectionality.

"We’re not at where we should be at and there are folks in our community who are racialized and marginalized who are being left behind, and I believe this flag is representative of where we should be."

Two local media reports follow.
