Plans Announced For LGBT Kindergarten In Germany

The school will be part of an LGBT-inclusive apartment complex in Berlin.

An LGBT organization in Berlin has announced plans to build the country's first ever LGBT kindergarten fully run by a gay rights group.

Schwulenberatung Berlin said the school will be just one component of an ambitious real estate project being developed by the organization, which will include 60 LGBT-inclusive apartments of different sizes.

The current layout boasts 35 apartments for elderly gay men and 25 for lesbian, trans and intersex individuals. In addition to the living spaces, the development will also contain two nursing homes, a restaurant, neighborhood center, school and various offices.

“We want to provide an appropriate space for children of queer families as well as parents whose children need to be familiar with a very diverse lifestyle at an early age," Marcel de Groot, CEO of Schwulenberatung Berlin explained.

The organization is currently in talks with the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district about the complex, with an official decision expected to come in the spring.

While the space has drawn a lot of positive attention from queer groups in the country, it seems Schwulenberatung is not the only LGBT organization interested in developing on the site.

Rad und Tat, a lesbian association, has proposed an alternative plan to the district. While the group also wants to build an apartment complex, its building will be solely for elderly lesbian women.

Though both organizations regret that they're vying for the same plot of land, Groot pointed out that, more than anything, this demonstrates the immense need for these kinds of spaces.

This need has also been felt in the United States, where several major cities have begun developing LGBT-specific senior living complexes.
