Man Arrested for Fatal Shooting of D.C. Trans Woman Zoe Spears

Police do not yet have a motive for the murder.

Police have arrested Baltimore man Gerardo Thomas, 33, in connection with the murder of transgender woman Zoe Spears, ABC 7 WJLA reports.

Spears, 23, was shot and killed June 13 in Fairmount Heights, a suburb of Washington, D.C. Her body was found near Eastern Avenue in the Maryland neighborhood.

Prince George's County detectives located Thomas after recovering surveillance video that captured the murder and the suspect's silver Dodge Caravan. The motive behind the fatal shooting remains unclear.

"In speaking to him, he didn't mention anything about her being a transgender female," said Maj. Brian Reilly, head of the Prince George’s County Police Department's criminal investigations division. "He didn't mention anything about her sexual orientation or anything like that. He gave us no reason why he did what he did. So at this point we don't have a motive. We're going to continue working on that."

Spears' body was found less than half a mile away from where trans woman Ashanti Carmon, 27, was shot and killed on March 30. But Thomas is not currently a suspect in Carmon's murder, which is still under investigation.

Friends say Spears had witnessed Carmon's murder and feared for her life.

"As I stand here now, I'm familiar with both cases, I've seen the evidence in both cases, and there is no link as of this moment between these two cases," Reilly said during a press briefing. "At this point, we do not believe Spears' murder is due to her being a witness in Ashanti's murder."

"Knowing this case was important to the Prince George's County Police Department, and that Zoe can get justice, it means that people who live in Prince George's County can feel confident that their lives matter," said Ruby Corado, a trans advocate close to both victims. "It does send a message that you can't hurt members of the LGBTQ community and get away with it."

Previously homeless, Spears had been living independently and dreamed of becoming a lawyer.
