Matt Bomer Talks "American Horror Story: Hotel," Working With Gaga, Being An Old-School Horror Fan

"I loved 'It Follows.' Did you see it? It’s so good!"

Getting cast members to open up about the new season of American Horror Story is tricky business, but would Matt Bomer spill some details?

I was at a Television Critics Association party last night in West Hollywood and grabbed a few minutes with the stylish actor (Bomer and hubby Simon Halls just made the International Best Dressed List) and was able to glean a few details for NewNowNext.

“You know I’m screwed right now,” Bomer said with a mega-watt smile when asked about his role on FX's American Horror Story: Hotel, bowing on October 7. “You meet me in the first episode [but] I can’t tell you where.”

Asked if we see, well, a lot of him in the season debut, he paused and replied, “Um…ish.”

It’s unclear if his character is on the good or not-so-good side of things, but Bomer did admit, “One of my favorite things about this show is that everybody gets all the shades of black, white and grey. So I think everybody has a really interesting arc over the course of the season from what I know after a few episodes.”

While we don't generally associate him with horror, Bomer told me his love of the genre started at a young age.

“I was a really big fan of horror as a kid—a really big fan,” he said. “All that '80s, early '90s horror? I was there opening weekend."

When he and Halls started a family, though, that went by the wayside: "I’ll still go and see a really good horror movie when it comes out. I loved It Follows. Did you see it? It’s so good! You have to see that!”

In AHS: Hotel, Bomer is being partnered with Lady Gaga, and he revealed the two will be getting together sooner rather than later.

“We start together next week,” he said. “I’m very, very excited. I think she’s an incredible artist and so creative and inspired. I’m really excited to see everything that she’s going to bring to the table.”

Hotel's cast also includes Kathy Bates, Naomi Campbell and Chloë Sevigny—not to mention fellow out actors Denis O’Hare, Cheyenne Jackson and Sarah Paulson. “I had to put my fan hat aside when I stepped on set. ‘Oh my God, I’m in a scene with Sarah Paulson!’”

But Bomer is most excited about reuniting with his Normal Heart director, Ryan Murphy.

“I just wanted to work with Ryan again—He’s so intuitive and he always gives me interesting, challenging, fun things to do so when he calls, I’m there.”

Working with such an array of great acting talent did have an effect on the man who we last saw dance, strip and sing in Magic Mike XXL.

“One of the great things about working with really incredible artists is that they raise your game as an actor,” he said. “If you’re able to be in the moment, then you watch the things they’re doing and you’re able to react off the things they’re doing. But there are definitely times when they're doing their coverage and I’m like ‘Holy shit, that was amazing.’"

Bomer is also happy that AHS: Hotel is a far cry from his last regular TV role, on USA’s White Collar: “Not that White Collar wasn’t [substantial], but it was breezy in a lot of ways. It’s good to get to work on some heavier material. [Horror Story] is a dark world to be a part of, but I love it. I’m getting to use a different paint box than I’ve gotten to use before.”

On American Horror Story: Freakshow, we saw Bomer have a lethal dalliance with Finn Wittrock's Dandy Mott, but the out actor wouldn't ell us how sexuality factors into his character on Hotel.

“You’ll get it all," he teased. "If you watch the first episode, you’ll get a lot of these answers.”
