Pro-LGBT Minister Detained In Russia, Ordered To Leave The Country

Rev. Jim Mulcahy was given five days to leave the country.

An American priest who supports LGBT rights was detained in Russia and ordered to leave the country.

The official state news agency Tass reported that Jim Mulcahy, a minister with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, was fined the equivalent of $30 and given five days to evacuate Russia.

He was detain while at an LGBT community center in Samara after a court ruled Mulcahy violated the terms of his tourist visa by engaging in religious activities.

It was not his first visit to the center: In September he spoke to members about his faith:

Jim believes that true faith is incompatible with hate speeches that sound from the mouth of not only ordinary parishioners, but of church officials too.

The true servant of God would never reject a person for their homosexuality, never forbid him/her to have communion, never expel him/her from the church community, never humiliate him/her during the service in front of other parishioners.

It's not clear if Mulcahy, who is also a pastor with the Metropolitan Community Church, violated Russia's ban on "homosexual propaganda."
