Transgender Comedian Will Franken Explains Why He Decided To "Transition Back" To Male
Will Franken is an American comedian who's made a name for himself overseas — primarily in England, where he mostly performs British sketch comedy for live audiences.
Franken received a bit of media attention in the U.S. earlier this year when he announced that he is transgender and would be transitioning to live full-time as Sarah Franken.
Now, after seven months living as Sarah, Will has decided to "revert back" to living as a male under his given name, Will Franken.
He explained in a lengthy op-ed in The Independent this week that the stress of living as a gender he did not present for most of his life was what made him decide to transition once again, this time to male, and that the self-awareness other people brought to his female self was too painful to handle.
"By the end of my seven months as Sarah I was frightened, angry, lonely, confused – and, perhaps worst of all, bored. Utterly bored with the topic of transgenderism," he wrote.
Will says he "received far more acceptance, or at least disinterested tolerance, than I ever did flagrant abuse," and that one redeeming factor of living as a transgender woman has given him "empathy for what minority comedians endure once the journalism and entertainment industries reduce them to their marketable externals: race, gender, or sexual preference."
"I owe no one an explanation. Nevertheless, I have chosen to offer one," he wrote in a separate essay for comedy blog Beyond The Joke, detailing his reasons for "changing back."
Said Will:
I had to admit that living as Sarah incorporated more consistent fear and resentment in my daily life than ever before. On my own, away from friends and supporters, I was rarely able to feel completely at ease with the world around me. Whether I was being called “gay-boy transsexual faggot” by Asians in East London or whether young female tourists were asking to get their photo with me as if I was the Ronald McDonald clown, rarely did a day go by where I was not molested in some degree by the fickle interference of others. Paradoxically, the only time I felt I could relax was onstage.
Best of luck to Will in his future endeavors!
