Celebrate Love With The Groundbreaking Gay Fairy Tale "Promised Land"

"We decided to write the story that our 8-year-old selves needed."

From star-crossed lovers to enchanted forests, the children's book Promised Land features all the usual fairy tale tropes, with one major difference: The young couple at its heart are both men.

Promised Land

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, New Zealand authors Adam Reynolds and Chaz Harris have released their LGBT fairy tale, Promised Land, appropriately enough on Valentine's Day.

The book tells the story of a prince and a young farmhand who fall in love after a chance meeting in the woods.

"Our hope is that young people growing up and struggling with their sexuality can look at the characters in our book and see themselves represented," says Reynolds. "We also hope it may be able to contribute to early acceptance from young people ahead of the time when they may encounter LGBTQ classmates, friends or relatives later on in their lives."

Promised Land

Although Promised Land isn't the first LGBT children's book, the authors say it's unique in that the couple's sexuality isn't the focus of the story, and their relationship doesn't become an issue.

"Our story features two lead characters who meet and fall in love that just happen to be [of the] same sex," says Harris. "Nobody questions it. That was vitally important to both of us."

Promised Land is available now.
