Chris Pratt Defends His Anti-LGBTQ Church After Ellen Page Called It Out

Hillsong Church doesn't allow gay people in positions of leadership, and has a history of sexual abuse and conversion therapy.

Chris Pratt has gone on the defensive after Ellen Page called his church "infamously anti-LGBTQ."

Pratt talked up his church, and discussed his recent Biblically-inspired fasting, on a recent visit to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, prompting Page's call-out on Twitter.

"If you are a famous actor and you belong to an organization that hates a certain group of people, don’t be surprised if someone simply wonders why it’s not addressed," Page tweeted. "Being anti LGBTQ is wrong, there aren’t two sides. The damage it causes is severe. Full stop."

Pratt attends Zoe Church, an evangelical megachurch. According to a doctrine obtained by Church Clarity, they do not believe in same-sex marriage.

Pratt posted an Instagram story arguing the church was welcoming to the LGBTQ community.

"It has recently been suggested that I belong to a church which 'hates people' and is 'infamously anti-LGBTQ,'" Pratt wrote. "Nothing could be further from the truth. I go to a church that opens their doors to absolutely everyone."

"Despite what the Bible says about divorce my church community was there for me every step of the way, never judging, just gracefully accompanying me on my walk," he continued. Pratt divorced actress Anna Faris last year. "They helped me tremendously offering love and support. It is what I have seen them do for others on countless occasions regardless of sexual orientation, race or gender."

He added that while his faith was "important" to him, he didn't see himself as being defined by his church, and that he was "not a spokesman for any church or any group of people."

"My values define who I am. We need less hate in this world, not more," he continued. "I am a man who believes that everyone is entitled to love who they want free from the judgement of their fellow man."
