Dallas Man Attacked With Crow Bar In 13th Anti-Gay Assault Since September

Police have beefed up a new task force determined to catch the suspects.

A gay man walking through Dallas' Oak Lawn neighborhood early last Sunday morning was attacked with a crow bar, making him at least the 13th victim in a string of brutal assaults that have plagued the city's popular gay nightlife strip since September.

"I'm grateful I didn't end up dead," Daniel Luhmann told WFAA.

He said he wants to see Dallas police make progress in arresting the suspects who attacked him and many others, but feels like "they're just overwhelmed" by the frequency of the attacks.

Luhmann described the attack, saying he thought he heard people fighting nearby shortly before he was jumped. In retrospect, he believes the the "derogatory language" he heard was actually directed at his sexual orientation.

It was around 1:30am on Sunday when he was walking home from the Cedar Spring Tap House that he was jumped from behind and hit with what he believes was a crow bar.

Luhmann was knocked to the ground and kicked, but his attackers fled when they saw his phone and believed he was in the middle of a call.

Dallas police haven't released a description of the attackers, but it's almost clear the perps aren't the two suspects previously arrested in connection with the attacks.

The latest attack has been harshly condemned by activists who've been calling for increased patrols and better lighting in the neighborhood.

Over the weekend, Dallas police Chief David Brown announced new surveillance cameras had been installed in the neighborhood, and extra officers would be added to the department's assaults units, effective today.
