Darren Criss On His "Hedwig" Transformation: "Mama Look Good!"

We all know Darren Criss looks good as a man, but the Glee actor is loving his painted mug in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

"The first time [you] put on the makeup, you immediately become this sassy bitch because you just look at yourself and go, 'Oh! Who is that?!' I was like, "Mama look good! Mama look real pretty!'" he told Playbill. "...I don’t care who you are — you put on a pair of heels, you’re going to hold yourself differently. It immediately empowers one’s physique."

Criss, who dolled up in Glee's Lady Gaga episode, says donning drag is empowering:  "A lot of drag characters are caricatures of a certain [quality] about somebody, and it brings out a lot of things for a lot of men… and women," he explains.  "For me, it does bring out this very sassy — I won't say composed because Hedwig obvious has a lot of hurt and a lot of turmoil within her — but it brings out this rock 'n' roll energy that can't be messed with, so that's super fun to play with."

We can't wait to see how Criss puts his own stamp on the Tony-winning musical—or how well he'll walk in those stiletto heels—when he takes over from John Cameron Mitchell on April 29.
