Why eBay India's Inclusion Of A Gay Proposal In Its Ad Is A Big Deal

The ad marks a major step in the right direction.

A new ad from eBay India is causing quite the stir with its casual, realistic portrayal of same-sex love.

The advertisement, called "Things Don't Judge," surfaced online in late September and centers on the idea that objects don't inherently have meaning until humans imbue them with it.

A jump rope is just a rope until it becomes a vehicle of joy for an older woman in a park. A recliner is simply a chair until it represents a woman's escape from the world around her. And a ring is just a piece of metal until it symbolizes the love between two men.

The ad explores these ideas and more with an observational, non-judgmental eye, challenging the viewer to question their own personal biases.

The inclusion of the gay couple's proposal is a significant one in a country where homosexuality remains a criminal offense. Though India's LGBT community continues to protest for the removal of anti-LGBT section 377 from the penal code, the government remains firm in keeping it on the books.

While the ad itself doesn't come down one way or another on the issue of same-sex marriage, that it represents the love between two gay men as something simple and human is a major victory for LGBT visibility in India.
