Anti-Gay Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis Has Lost Her Re-election Bid

The Rowan County magistrate who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples has been unseated by a Democrat.

Kim Davis, the Kentucky magistrate who refused to sign marriage licenses for same-sex couples, claiming it went against her religious beliefs, has lost her re-election bid.

Democrat Elwood Caudill Jr., the chief deputy property valuation administrator for Rowan County, has defeated Davis, who ran as a Republican,by around 700 votes, the Lexington Herald Leader reports.

Davis made international headlines when she said her Christian faith prevented her from granting licenses to gay couples after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized marriage equality in 2015, for which she was briefly sent to jail.

"This is what happens when you flat out refuse to properly execute constituent service," the Victory Fund tweeted.

Caudill previously ran against Davis for the position in 2014, losing by just 23 votes in the primary, back when Davis was a Democrat. He beat one of the gay men denied a marriage license by Davis, David Ermold, in this year's primary.

Caudill has said he intends to treat everyone seeking a marriage license equally, regardless of the couples' sexual orientations, but Ermold has spoken out against his former opponent, saying he didn't take he and his husband's fight against Davis seriously.

Ermold also claimed he had received numerous reports of Caudill making bigoted remarks, accused him of homophobia, and criticized LGBTQ rights organization Fairness Campaign for endorsing him. Caudill has repeatedly denied those allegations of bigotry.
