Kirsten Gillibrand Gives Her Dress to Drag Queen at Iowa Gay Bar

The 2020 presidential candidate beat her mug at the Blazing Saddle in Des Moines.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who announced her presidential campaign in January, is already an honorary queen.

During her latest campaign trip to Iowa, the New York lawmaker and Democratic 2020 hopeful popped into a gay bar in Des Moines Friday night. She joined the drag performers backstage, where it looks like she may've mopped some makeup tips, and even gave one queen the dress off her back.

"Vana and the amazing queens at the Blazing Saddle in Des Moines invited me for a visit tonight before their show," the 52-year-old politician tweeted. "I felt underdressed, so I brought a dress I picked up yesterday—turns out it fit me, but it fit Vana even better! Thank you for having me, ladies!"

The Saddle, as locals call it, opened in 1983 and is the oldest gay bar in Des Moines.

Sen. Gillibrand, who has represented New York in the Senate since 2009, is set to speak about her LGBTQ agenda May 2 at Manhattan's Elmo Lounge with drag performer and activist Marti Gould Cummings.

"For the first time in the history of the United States a presidential candidate is sitting down one on one with a drag queen to discuss the issues," Cummings tweeted. 'This is a huge moment in our history."

Gillibrand has a documented history of supporting the LGBTQ community. In 2015 she joined other local lawmakers in encouraging the state to honor New York City’s historic Stonewall Inn with a national park. She was also a main force behind the fight to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Last February she was an honored speaker at HRC’s annual New York gala.

“Sen. Gillibrand is on the front lines of the battle against the Trump-Pence administration’s politics of hate, fear, and discrimination,” wrote former HRC president Chad Griffin in a statement. “From fighting back against Trump’s transgender military ban to pushing for LGBTQ non-discrimination protections, Sen. Gillibrand stands shoulder to shoulder with the LGBTQ community as a champion of equality.”
