That Gay “Laura Dern” Tribute Song Now Has a Dance Remix

Streaming "Gay Spirit (Laura Dern)" will benefit GMCLA.

How could a tribute to Laura Dern, sung by Alex Newell and the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, get any gayer? Hold their vodka sodas.

Thanks to the Oscar winner's inspiration, last month's 35th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards definitely had us catching the spirit.

At one point during the ceremony, because LGBTQ representation is so important, host Aubrey Plaza welcomed GMCLA to celebrate the "gayest moments" in this year's nominated films that mainstream audiences "may not have realized were gay."

GMCLA literally sung the praises of Idina Menzel in Uncut Gems, J.Lo pole-dancing to Fiona Apple in Hustlers, and Renée Zellweger's Judy press tour. "The kid from Marriage Story, probably one day," they sang in the bit, written by composer Greg O'Connor and lyricist Jordan Firstman.

But the gayest thing about Marriage Story—and any story, quite frankly—is Dern: "Laura Dern kicking her feet up on the couch, Laura Dern ordering a kale salad, Laura Dern dressed slutty in court, just all of Laura Dern." That's when Newell entered to belt her blessed name, and the Big Little Lies star was living for it.

After video of the song went viral, O'Connor and GMCLA's Quinn Coleman teamed up with DJ duo The Perry Twins to create a dance club version, which is now available for streaming.

As a bonus, 100% of proceeds from the remix will benefit GMCLA and its various outreach programs, including the Alive Music Project and the Arts for Incarcerated Youth Network.
