Lettuce Celebrate! Lesbian Nurse and Activist Named “Sexiest Vegan”

Jasmine Nakasone won PETA's annual contest.

Look who beat the meat!

A lesbian nurse from Virginia has been declared a winner of animal welfare group PETA’s annual "Sexiest Vegan Next Door" contest.

Jasmine Nakasone, a licensed vocational nurse, also runs a vegan lifestyle blog. She lives in Chesterfield with her wife, their daughter, and two adopted dogs.

The LGBTQ and animal rights activist beat out hundreds of entrants from across the country to win bragging rights and a trip for two to Hawaii, courtesy of Humane Travel.

Nakasone went vegan eight years ago. "No living being wants to die to end up on a plate," she says. "Being vegan is an easy way to make the world a kinder place every time we sit down to eat."

"I fight for equality for all and my hope is that I inspire you to be a better version of yourself," she writes on Instagram. "I believe if you don't have equality in one aspect of society, then you can't expect it anywhere else. That's what a vegan lifestyle is about for me—a way to help make sure everyone is treated right, including animals."

"As an official Sexiest Vegan Next Door, Jasmine Nakasone lives and breathes a neighborly standard of respect—for everyone," says PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman in a statement. "PETA encourages anyone who's inspired by her huge heart to follow her lead and opt for vibrant vegan meals."

New York firefighter and Ironman competitor Kevin Duffy is this year's other winner. PETA selected Nakasone and Duffy based on several factors, including public online vote count.

Salt Lake City resident Chancellor Rose Partington, a trans model who works at an animal hospital, was among this year's finalists.

PETA made headlines last year by demanding people rethink “speciesist, anti-animal” colloquialisms, comparing anti-animal language to homophobia and racism.

“We try to make our actions colorful and controversial, thereby grabbing headlines around the world and spreading the message of kindness to animals to thousands—sometimes millions—of people,” reads the group's FAQ page.
