The team behind PopTV's One Day at a Time is truly taking things...well, one day at a time.

In a new interview with Deadline, creator-showrunner Norman Lear and executive producers Gloria Calderon Kellett and Brent Miller opened up about the queer-inclusive sitcom's tumultuous trip to its current network, PopTV, and its uncertain future.

As NewNowNext previously reported, Lear's 21st-century reimagining of his hit 1970s sitcom premiered on Netflix in 2017. The streamer canceled the critically acclaimed reboot after just three seasons, a decision that outraged its many LGBTQ and Latinx fans. Luckily, PopTV stepped in and picked up the Sony Pictures-produced series for a highly anticipated Season 4.

"You can’t keep a good show down," Calderon Kellett told Deadline of the rocky journey.

She also thanked the show's vocal fanbase: "I think also to the community of people, fans that love the show who were so vocal on social media in terms of what it meant to them, the representation not just for the Latino community but also for our veterans and LGBTQ and just immigrants. We really had such an intersectionality of people who related to the show, and we’re so grateful to the fans who were so vocal."

Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic threw the ODAAT cast and crew another curveball. Productions were shutdown earlier this year due to quarantine, so Season 4 was cut down to just six episodes filmed on stage. The team also produced an animated seventh episode titled "The Politics Episode," which tackles the upcoming presidential election head-on.

"We would love for [CBS] to show 4.07, which is the animated episode, but thus far, they are not going to be airing that," Calderon Kellett added.

ODAAT Season 4 is now scheduled for an October 5 broadcast premiere on CBS, and Lear says its performance on the cable net will likely influence whether it is renewed for a fifth season. In a way, the timing is serendipitous. This year also marks the 45th anniversary of the original One Day at a Time, which premiered on CBS in 1975.

Asked why fans should tune in, Lear, 98, didn't mince his words: "Tell them because I said so."
