Russian Ad Uses Homophobia to Get Out the Vote

This isn't the first time a Russian commercial has suggested not voting will lead to homosexuality.

An ad aimed at getting out the vote for Russia's regional elections suggests that people who don't vote are gay.

The spot shows two men walking through a city, riding on a bus, sitting in a park, and eventually traveling home, all while discussing the futility of voting, one calling it "an illusion of democracy."

While the conversation continues, the pair wind up in a bedroom, with one undressing the other and himself, before closing the door on the viewer, as the other man lies bottom up on the bed.

"They’re amoral. They think they can fool the people,” one of them men says as they undress.

“Let the others go and vote. We have more important things to do," says the other.

The screen goes black and the date for a number of mayoral and gubernatorial elections—September 9—flashes across the screen.

The homophobic video has been viewed on Facebook over 2,000 times, and has more than 11,500 views on Russian social media network Vkontakte, The Moscow Times reports.

While there are rumors the commercial was produced by the local governor of Samara, no direct connection has been made to any campaign, the publication reports.

This is not the first time Russian society's hostility towards gay people has been used to try to get people to the polls. An ad that ran ahead of the March 2018 presidential elections warned that not voting could lead to heterosexual men being forced to live with gay men.
