Target Welcomes Trans People To Use The Bathroom That Fits Their Gender Identity

"Inclusivity is a core belief at Target...it's something we celebrate."

In a statement issued on their corporate website, Target took a stand for inclusivity, stating that transgender employees and customers are welcome to use restrooms that correspond with their gender identities.

The statement was released Tuesday morning and comes amid an intense national debate over trans inclusion in public restrooms. In the past month, several states (notably North Carolina, Mississippi and Tennessee) have passed anti-LGBT legislation that prohibits trans individuals from using bathrooms or changing facilities that align with their gender identities.

“Recent debate…has reignited a national conversation around inclusivity,” the statement begins.

“So earlier this week, we reiterated with our team members where Target stands and how our beliefs are brought to life in how we serve our guests.”

“Inclusivity is a core belief at Target,” it continues. “It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.”

Target has always been ahead of the curve in terms of establishing inclusive and welcoming spaces for LGBT folks. In the past, they’ve aired commercials featuring same-sex parents, phased out gender-based signage in their toy departments and even signed on in support of the federal Equality Act, which provides protections to LGBT individuals and actively opposes discrimination.

“We believe that everyone—every team member, every guest, and every community—deserves to be protected from discrimination, and treated equally.”

The statement goes on to specifically address the issue of bathrooms and what Target is doing to ensure that their stores continue to be safe spaces for all.

“In our stores, we demonstrate our commitment to an inclusive experience in many ways. Most relevant for the conversations currently underway, we welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.”

“Everyone deserves to feel like they belong,” the statement concludes.

“You’ll always be accepted, respected and welcomed at Target.”
