Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Blasts Obama Over Federal Guidelines For Trans Students: "He's Not A King!"

"I am working with the governor of North Carolina," Abbott declared, "and we are going to fight back."

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is not happy the Obama Administration has issued orders to public schools, requiring them to allow trans students to use facilities that match their gender identity.

In a tweet after news of the new guidelines broke, Abbott wrote, "Obama can't rewrite the Civil Rights Act. He's not a king."

But the former state attorney general had already planned to wage war against the trans community: Yesterday, at the Texas GOP convention in Dallas, he told delegates they could expect legislation similar to North Carolina's odious HB2.

"I am working with the governor of North Carolina, and we are going to fight back."

After the superintendent of Fort Worth public schools approved a trans-friendly policy, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick called for his resignation. Today, Patrick accused President Obama of extorting states to follow his order.

"He says he's going to withhold funding if schools do not follow the policy. Well, in Texas, he can keep his 30 pieces of silver. We will not yield to blackmail from the president of the United States." (Patrick dismissed the $10 billion in federal funds Texas schools receive as mostly going for free breakfast and lunch programs.)

The state Republican party is working on adding a so-called "bathroom bill" to its party platform, but no legislative action would take place until lawmakers reconvene in January.
