TNT's "Claws" Season Two Is Even Gayer With Twink-Mobster Romance and Quiet Ann Gets Loud

Creator Eliot Lawrence shares details on the "twisty and turny" second season.

Dean Norris as Uncle Daddy

The Claws are out even more fiercely this season on TNT's imminently quotable uber-dark dramedy about a Florida nail salon—and its five fierce female employees—laundering money for the mob.

Originally developed at HBO before finding life and a home at TNT, and blending Sex and the City sassiness with Breaking Bad criminal and craziness, Claws stars Niecy Nash as salon owner Desna Simms, whose staff of manicurists (and enforcers) includes the strong and often literally silent lesbian Quiet Ann (Judy Reyes), live under the thumb of bisexual Dixie Mafia head Uncle Daddy (Dean Morris).

Judy Reyes as Quiet Ann

Last season ended with a bang, as Uncle Daddy's wife Juanda (Dale Dickey) was murdered by Russian mobsters. Creator and writer Eliot Lawrence, who got his start on Logo's Big Gay Sketch Comedy Show (which launched Kate McKinnon's career) and wrote the offbeat 2014 Kristen Wiig film Welcome to Me, says that we can expect to see "a new side" to Uncle Daddy's relationship with his boyfriend, Tony (Evan Daigle). "Tony’s sort of the classic twink, but Evan also brings this incredible oddness to the role," Lawrence says. "I can’t reveal too much, the plots are so complicated and twisty and turn-y, but I think you’re going to be titillated and pleased where we go.”

Quiet Ann and Polly (Carrie Preston)

As for the typically stoic Quiet Ann, we're going to hear a lot from her in the fourth episode. "One of our writers had the idea to root it in Quiet Ann’s point of view, so we’re literally going to hear her running internal monologues," Lawrence shares. "I think she’s one of those characters where people want to know more, because she’s so enigmatic, and will love learning about her family and period of estrangement from them. And we’re going to meet a brother.”

While being tight-lipped about specifics, Lawrence also promises more LGBTQ characters this season, including a big reveal in the finale that would lead into the third chapter of Claws' ultimate story arc. "We see Claws as a long journey for Desna to be the queen she was meant to be, but it’s going to take a while and be a lot of fun. We'll see her continue to rise.”

Might we end up seeing a Kristen Wiig cameo somewhere down the line? “I’m dreaming of it and she’s open to it," Lawrence says. "She’s a fan of the show, so we’re dreaming of the perfect Kristen moment.”

Claws airs Sundays on TNT.
