MTV Has Asked Transgender Service Members To Attend The VMAs

"MTV has requested service member participation for this year's VMAs," a Pentagon spokesperson told CNN.

MTV has reached out to the U.S. military about allowing active-duty transgender service members to attend the Video Music Awards on Sunday.

The rights of transgender troops have been in the news since Donald Trump announced a full ban on trans personnel in the military last month via tweet.

"MTV has requested service member participation for this year's VMAs," a Pentagon spokesperson told CNN. "At this time the Department of Defense is reviewing the parameters of the request."

Members of the military on active duty face restrictions on participation on public events, especially those involving politics.

MTV President Chris McCarthy confirmed to NewNowNext that the ask was made: "MTV has invited transgender members of the U.S. Armed Forces to the 2017 Video Music Awards, and we would be honored if they could attend," he said.

"Any patriot who is putting their own life at risk to fight for our freedom and stands for equality is a hero at MTV, and to young people everywhere."

It wouldn't be the first time the network has injected LGBT rights into the VMAs: In 2010, Lady Gag brought several LGBT service members who had been discharged under Don't Ask Don't Tell. Out NBA star Jason Lewis a presenter at the 2013 VMAs, when he introduced Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert to sing "Same Love."

Hosted by Katy Perry, this year's ceremony will also feature trans social-media personality Gigi Gorgeous as a special correspondent for a revamped TRL. The awards have also switched to gender-neutral categories and changed the "Moon Man" trophy to a "Moon Person."

The 2017 Video Music Awards will air Sunday, August 27, at 8/7c on Logo and MTV.
