TV on Tap: Lifetime Finds a New Aaliyah, Why "American Idol"'s Ratings Are Down and "The Strain" Looks to Set a Record

News

Fox chief Peter Rice talked to the Television Critics Association and commented on the decline of Idol's ratings. "...we haven’t found a group of kids the last two years who really captured the imagination of the public. We talked about it this year— how do we focus on that and not get wrapped up in this constant conversation about the judges and how good they are?” Pretty much every time I've paid attention to Idol, it's been due to a contestant who grabbed my attention, so I'd say he's on the right track.

We can expect to see Arrow and the upcoming spin-off Flash cross over in different ways. "You will see — organically — characters shifting over, villains shifting over back and forth between Flash and Arrow. We will be introducing more villains that are part of the DC Comics universe." I'm still hoping for Cheshire to show up, but I guess they need to get Roy's story to a certain point before that happens.

Jaime Pressly will appear in a recurring role on Mom as a newly sober woman who is a handful for Anna Faris's character.

The CW has ordered a third season of Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Supernatural producer Jeremy Carver, joined by stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, all said they don't see the long-running drama ending anytime soon. After this last season, I'm not so sure anymore.

Still, I would be up for full seasons of episodes where the Winchesters go  undercover.

Alexandra Shipp has taken over the lead role in Lifetime's Aaliyah biopic.

Meanwhile, Lifetime's original choice to play Aalyiah, Zendaya, commented on Instagram why she quit the project."The main reasons were that the production value wasn't there, there were complications with the music rights, and I just felt like it wasn't being handled delicately considering the situation."

Steven Pasquale will appear in two episodes of The Good Wife as a campaign expert.

FX held back on the ratings for The Strain for a couple of days to count DVR viewers. The early results say that 4.73 million viewers watched the premier episode, the best performance for a cable debut this year. FX predicts the number of people who watch the episode within seven days will let The Strain beat the network's record for a drama debut. (That record is currently held by The Americans.) Meanwhile, with three days of DVR usage counted, the second season premiere of Masters of Sex went from losing a few viewers season-to-season to matching it.

Using those less-accurate same-day ratings, USA's new bad boy doctor drama Rush, had a disappointing debut while Satisfaction did a little better. Over at FX, Married won its timeslot in the target demo while You're the Worst lost a good amount of those Married viewers.

There's a plan to distract Bay and Daphne from their grief with a road trip to Chicago to visit colleges and to find a relative who lives in the area. That should be an interesting meeting, this is your second cousin and this is the person you thought was your second cousin until we learned about that whole baby switch.

The city finals head back to St. Louis. Keep your fingers crossed the weather is warmer than last time. I hate worrying that the people who fall in the water might get hypothermia. Oh, and warmer weather encourages the competitors to take on the course shirtless.

The Fosters (ABC Family) 9:00 PM ET

Oh, dear, we've got an episode of The Fosters where the description includes "tragedy strikes" and "Mother" is in the title. Does that mean we're going to have to give up Annie Potts or Lorraine Toussaint? I don't like either option.

Major Crimes (TNT) 9:00 PM ET

Jon Tenney, Malcom-Jamal Warner and Bill Brochtrup are all back this week as the Major Crimes team seeks out a serial killer terrorizing the city. The guest cast also includes the faboo Lindsay Price.

Who wants to kill every supernatural being in Beacon Hills? Stiles and Scott think it's someone on the lacrosse team. That should add some tension to Kira's first game.
