Underwear Company Launches Line For Trans Men Who Get Periods

"We have to support the trans community as part of ours."

When underwear brand THINX launched in January, 2014 they had a bold mission of creating underwear for women with periods. To do this, they created a patented technology called THINX QuadTECH® that is an absorbent, moisture-wicking and antimicrobial fiber that helps the wearer avoid unwanted leakage.

The product sold out quickly, but one complaint began rising to the surface for CEO Miki Agrawal: Many transgender men menstruate as well.

Agrawal admits that up until the influx of feedback, it had not been a thought she'd considered. "Which is not super surprising," she tells Mashable, "given the lack of trans male visibility even now."

After months of testing and polling and a year of development, Agrawal introduced a more traditionally masculine boxer-brief type boyshort ("something without lace") thanks to input from Sawyer (pictured throughout), a 30-year old transgender man from Brooklyn who became a consultant after being discovered on his Instagram.

"I experienced with five-ish years of identifying a man but still having my period...and would wear multiple layers so I didn't leak anywhere and no one knew I had my period," Sawyer says in a short film produced by the brand. "Even if I'm a transgender male, I still have it in my head that men aren't supposed to have their period, because that's what society has taught me. In the trans community no one is talking about men with periods because it's a source of shame."

Thanks to folks like Sawyer, a dialogue has now begun. "[We want to] make people accept and understand trans men as menstruating people, by being open and honest about it and unafraid of people's judgments," says Agrawal. "We have to support the trans community as part of ours."

The new underwear, currently on sale, retails for $34.
