John Cameron Mitchell Officially Coming Back To "Hedwig And The Angry Inch" On Broadway

It's been rumored since the show opened, but now we can confirm: John Cameron Mitchell, who wrote and starred in the original Hedwig and the Angry Inch, is returning the lead role on Broadway. He'll replace Michael C. Hall, who is currently wearing the wig and heels at the Belasco Theatre, for a limited eight-week run starting January 21.

This will mark Mitchell’s first New York stage appearance since he starred in Hedwig at the Jane Street Theatre in the late 90s, and the last time he played the part since 2001's Hedwig and the Angry Inch feature film, which he directed.

“I am in equal parts thrilled and terrified to be returning to Hedwig. Fifteen years ago she kicked my butt so hard that I quit acting," teased Mitchell, 51. "But like an expertlly face-lifted ex-wife, she's lured me back... Here's hoping I don't need a walker by the end of the run.”

Hedwig and the Angry Inch songwriter Stephen Trask said he was "excited and happy for [John] that he gets to revisit her in this incredible incarnation" said but admitted he felt a little left out. "I kind of wish I were going to be on that stage.”

Michael C. Hall will play his final performance as Hedwig on January 18.
